Ramayana is an app for reading and listening to Vālmīki’s Rāmāyaṇa, chapter by chapter, on iPhone and iPad. It’s made by Vectorlight Labs. This page explains what happens to your data when you use it. The short version: we don’t collect any.

The short version

  • We collect no personal data. There’s no account to create.
  • There’s no analytics, no crash reporting and no advertising.
  • Subscriptions are paid through Apple. RevenueCat, the service that confirms them, sees an anonymous ID and your purchase history, but never your name or payment details.
  • Chapters, narration and paintings are downloaded from our content server, which runs on Cloudflare.
  • The Kīrtan section plays devotional songs from YouTube, which YouTube serves directly.

What stays on your device

The app keeps a few things on your iPhone or iPad so it works the way you expect:

  • chapters you’ve opened, so you can read them again offline
  • your reading and listening position, and the days you’ve read or prayed
  • your settings, such as language, text size and reminder times
  • your Nām Jap count.

These stay on your device. They’re never sent to us.

Reminders

If you turn on reminders, the app schedules them on your device using Apple’s notifications. They’re set and delivered on your device; no server is involved and we don’t know whether you use them.

Downloading content

When you open a chapter, the app fetches its text, audio and images from content.vectorlightlabs.com, which is delivered by Cloudflare.

Like any web server, Cloudflare processes your IP address and basic request details, such as the file requested, the time and your device type. It does this to deliver the files and to protect the service from abuse. We don’t use these details to identify you, and we don’t run analytics on them. Cloudflare handles this data under its own privacy policy.

Subscriptions

Ramayana Pro is an optional subscription. Payment is handled entirely by Apple; we never see your name, email address or payment details.

To confirm your subscription, the app uses RevenueCat. RevenueCat receives an anonymous ID created by the app, the purchases made with it, and basic technical details such as your device type and app version. It uses them only to tell the app whether Pro is active, including when you restore purchases on a new device. RevenueCat handles this data under its own privacy policy.

Apple’s privacy policy covers the payment itself.

Kīrtan videos

The Kīrtan section plays devotional songs that are hosted on YouTube. When you play one, it loads in YouTube’s own player, and YouTube (Google) receives your IP address and the usual details any website receives. YouTube may also use cookies in that player. This is covered by Google’s privacy policy. Nothing is sent to YouTube until you open the Kīrtan section.

Third parties

The only outside services involved are:

  • Cloudflare, to deliver chapters, narration and paintings
  • Apple, for app downloads, subscriptions and reminders
  • RevenueCat, to confirm subscriptions
  • YouTube, for the songs in Kīrtan.

We don’t share, sell or rent any data, because we don’t have any to share.

How long data is kept

Everything the app stores lives on your device until you delete the app. We keep no copy on our side. RevenueCat keeps purchase records for as long as it needs them to confirm and restore your subscription.

Deleting your data

Deleting the app removes everything it stored on your device. There’s nothing held by us to delete. If you’d like RevenueCat’s anonymous purchase record removed, email us and we’ll ask RevenueCat to delete it.

Children

Ramayana is suitable for all ages. We don’t collect personal data from anyone, children included.

Your rights

If you’re in India, the Digital Personal Data Protection Act 2023 gives you rights over your personal data, including the right to access, correct and erase it. People elsewhere have similar rights, for example under the EU and UK GDPR or California law.

Because we hold no personal data about you, there’s usually nothing for us to access, correct or delete. You’re still welcome to email us with any question or request, and we’ll reply.

Changes to this policy

If we change this policy, we’ll update this page and the “Last updated” date. If a change is material, for example if the app starts collecting something new, we’ll update this page before that app change ships.
